HOLTER TEST IN HEART PATIENTS

WHAT IS THE NEED
FOR HOLTER WHEN THERE IS AN ECG

Standard
ECG just provides a brief sample of the electrical activity of the heart over mere 10
seconds, whereas the Holter provides a view of the electrical activity of the heart over 24
hours. Sometimes we may not get a clear understanding of a patient problem by
looking at 10 seconds data. We may need data of a longer duration

WHAT IS HOLTER

Holter
comprises a small, lightweight, electrode that continuously records ECG
data. It reviews ECG data during routine activity, as well as during periods of
physical and psychological stress.

This can be performed for as short as
24 to 1 week. The recorded data are analyzed remotely and was given as a report.

This
is most commonly used in the diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmias or conduction
abnormalities

it is often indicated in patients
with syncope, presyncope, palpitation, and chest pain former being the most
common reason

INDICATIONS FOR HOLTER

●Unexplained syncope, near syncope,
or episodic dizziness

●Unexplained recurrent palpitations

Information provided
by a Holter

●Total number of heartbeats

●Average heart rate of an individual

● Minimum and maximum heart rates

●Total Number of premature beats

●Episodes of high heart rate and their
etiology (eg, supraventricular or ventricular)

● Any pauses greater than three
seconds and etiology of the pauses (e.g., sinus pauses versus AV block)

●ST-segment changes

●Patient-reported symptoms and any
associated ECG findings

●Representative samples of ECG tracings
(e.g., hourly samples)
