Even though the TMT test is considered generally quite safe, rarely it is associated with potential risks or discomfort to the patient
Serious complications (i.e., heart attack, sudden death) can happen while performing the TMT test albeit very rarely. They occur approximately once in every 10,000 TMT tests performed The following patients should not perform the TMT test as they are prone to serious events if they do it:
1. Heart attack (within two days)
2.On-going chest pain
3.Uncontrolled abnormal heart rates (very high heart rates) with low blood pressure
4. Severe valvular stenosis with symptoms like breathlessness, syncope or chest pain
5.Unstable heart failure (weak heart with symptoms like swollen legs)
6. Active endocarditis (infection of heart valves)
7. Acute myocarditis or pericarditis (infection of heart layers)
8. Acute aortic dissection (dissection of major artery of the body)
9.Acute pulmonary embolism (clot dislodged in an artery supplying lungs), pulmonary infarction, or deep venous thrombosis (clots in leg veins)
10. Physical disability that precludes safe and adequate testing (spine problem, joint issues that hinder walking)
