BEFORE AN ANGIOGRAM TEST, THINGS YOU SHOULD FOLLOW

BEFORE THE ANGIOGRAM PROCEDURE, THE THINGS YOU SHOULD FOLLOW

The angiogram test is a common diagnostic test done to establish the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. It helps in decision-making regarding optimal strategies to manage patients with coronary artery disease.  A coronary angiogram is generally done to see if there’s a restriction in blood flow going to your heart. Now we are going to discuss the precautions you should take before a coronary angiogram.

·         Food: avoid solid food after midnight the night before the test.
·         Have plenty of clear fluids only up to 3 hours before the test.
·         One needs to shave the groin area on both sides, wrist area on the right side  before the test
·         Remove all jewelry before entering the Cath lab.
·         One may keep glasses, hearing aid(s), and denture(s) on during the procedure.
·         Inform the treating doctor if you have a known allergy to x-ray dye, iodine, shellfish, or any other allergies.
·         Medication (sedatives) that help you relax just before the angiogram will be given to you but you will be awake throughout the procedure.
·         You will also be given bolus doses of blood thinners prior to stenting that prevents immediate clogging of the stent. This is particularly done when your doctor thinks that you are going to have narrowed arteries in the heart
·         You can continue your hypertensive drugs on the morning of the day of the procedure. You need to stop certain antidiabetic drugs (Metformin) during the day of the procedure and they should not be restarted until your doctor told you to do so. Anticoagulants like warfarin need to be stopped prior to an angiogram.

PRECAUTIONS BEFORE ANGIOGRAM TEST

You are also requested to undergo some basic blood test, ECG test, and 2d echo test prior to the angiogram. If your creatine is high, you may receive IV fluids and other drugs to prevent kidney damage by the contrast agent.

CONTRAST AGENT IS TOXIC TO KIDNEY
