Normal blood pressure range
To define high blood pressure, a proper measurement technique is mandatory. The blood pressure of an individual is quite variable and depends on multiple factors such as
posture, food intake, age, and exercise. One should avoid coffee, tea, exercise, and food intake at least 30 minutes before the measurement.
Normal blood pressure is defined as systolic blood pressure below 120 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure below 80 mm Hg.
Hypertension or high blood pressure definition
If there is a disparity in the category because of the systolic and diastolic pressures, the higher category is to be considered as the actual stage. If systolic blood pressure is 160 mmHg
and diastolic is just 80 mmHg, the actual stage is stage 2 hypertension as we have to take a higher category.

Few people have systolic blood pressure ≥130 mmHg systolic but diastolic blood pressure <80 mmHg. This is called isolated systolic hypertension. it is
quite common in the elderly population. On the other hand, few have systolic blood pressure <130 mmHg systolic but ≥80 mmHg diastolic blood pressure. This is called isolated diastolic hypertension. This is common in young adults who are overweight.
When should a high blood pressure patient seek a doctor urgently?
This is a medical emergency called as hypertension crisis. If blood pressure exceeds 180/120 mm Hg, consult your doctor immediately. It could be a hypertensive crisis. you
may get a heart attack, brain stroke or kidney failure if your blood pressure is not brought under control urgently. The presence of chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness/weakness
